They shared insights about how to create form, how to relate new to old, what they learned from their built projects and ones unrealized. They talked about designing at all scales, from the macro to the micro, the role of drawing, and that of the client, politics, and the economy. They discussed aesthetics, color, and form. They were paired with journalists, curators, historians, critics, educators, and clients-those who create narratives that frame the intellectual discourse about the built environment for the profession and the general public. The conversations focused on the most compelling and consequential issues that designers currently face. To lubricate the discussion, master mixologists invented cocktails in the spirit of each designer's work. The recipes are included in the book. Cocktails and Conversations intends to inspire and delight, while distilling the ideas presented. The current exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, titled ‘The Project of Independence: Architectures of Decolonization in South Asia, 1947–1985’, covers projects from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, noting that while the predominant mode of design in these parts of South Asia was defined by the principles of high modernism, there existed parallel design movements by architects who sought to utilize local materials, knowledge of indigenous craftsmanship, and motifs from precolonial culture. For the past three decades, India’s architecture has been defined by the economic and socio-cultural shifts towards a robust market economy: rapid urbanization, densification, capitalistic development, and privatization. Today, the state of architecture in India is characterized simultaneously by newer typologies, materials and technologies, and the critical question is how to deal with the edifices from its past. This program seeks to look at the work of both the internationalist modernists as well as the more regionalist architects of the post-colonial period and explore the issues of public perception, preservation, legacy, along with the factors influencing architectural development in contemporary India. The program was divided into three sessions. The first was a critical retrospective on post- Independence architecture in India, and its changing identity and purpose today. The second panel focused on the experiences of architects from the United States who have, and continue to, engage with development in South Asia. It explores nine recent projects in six Latin American countries by Latin American, North American, European, and Asian architects at the scale of both campus and classroom. LATITUDES is a complementary program, seeking to highlight the work of additional Latin American architects and expanding project typologies beyond education, at the scale of both city planning and individual buildings. The design issues facing Latin American architects are like those throughout the world: climate change, rapid population growth, limited resources, income disparity, aging urban infrastructure, and the destruction of natural habitats. Added to these topics are the issues of changing political climates, migration and, in some areas, financial instability.
