These maps illustrates the transformation of the original Shawmut Peninsula into the modern city of Boston. Boston’s “Landmaking” unfolded over more than a century. Early projects leveled the surrounding hills to fill Mill Pond. Once that material was exhausted, workers hauled in soil from four of the remaining five hills and even used refuse as landfill before moving further away. These efforts steadily created new land to accommodate a growing population. Over time, Boston’s footprint expanded from roughly 800 acres to nearly 5,000, reshaping the coastline entirely. Each map captures a moment in this long process, with the final one depicting the city’s present-day form. This map will accompany the Boston Silk Scarf and Tote Bags.
